Stock (Equity)

A security that represents part ownership in a corporation. Holders (shareholders) have a claim on the company's assets and earnings.

Modern stock issuance began in the early 1600s with the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which was arguably the world's first true public company, using shares to raise capital for large voyages.
