Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT)

A company that owns, operates, or finances income-producing real estate. They allow individuals to invest in commercial real estate without direct property ownership.

Created by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to give small investors access to large-scale, income-producing real estate through a security similar to a Mutual Fund.
