Option (Finance)

A derivative financial contract that gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) an asset at a specific price on or before a certain date.

While early forms existed in antiquity, modern, standardized, and exchange-traded options began in 1973 with the opening of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE).
