Monetary Policy

Actions undertaken by a central bank (like the Federal Reserve) to manipulate the money supply and credit conditions to stimulate or contract economic activity.

Became a formalized government tool during the 20th century. Before central banks, money supply was often controlled by the gold standard or commodity flows.
