Margin Call

A demand from a broker that an investor deposit additional money or securities into a margin account to bring the account up to the minimum required maintenance margin.

This practice became widely regulated after the 1929 stock market crash, which was exacerbated by excessive leveraging and subsequent margin calls that forced investors to sell.
