Initial Public Offering (IPO)

The first time a private company offers its stock to the public, typically to raise expansion capital.

While similar concepts existed before, the modern IPO process gained prominence with the establishment of major stock exchanges like the London Stock Exchange (1773) and NYSE (1792).
