Inflation

The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, consequently, the purchasing power of currency is falling.

Historically, periods of high inflation often coincided with governments debasing currency (reducing the precious metal content of coins). The term gained its modern economic meaning in the U.S. during the Civil War.
