Futures Contract

A standardized legal agreement to buy or sell a specific commodity or security at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future.

Originated in 1848 with the establishment of the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), allowing farmers and merchants to manage price risk on crops like corn and wheat.
