Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF)

A security that tracks an index, sector, commodity, or other assets, but trades like a regular stock on a stock exchange.

The first ETF, the S&P 500 Depository Receipt (SPY), launched in 1993, blending the diversification of mutual funds with the tradability of stocks.
