Equity

The value of an owner's stake in an asset or business; calculated as the difference between assets and liabilities ( A - L = E )

The term derives from the Latin aequitas, meaning "equality" or "justice." In business, it became central with the rise of joint-stock companies in the 17th century, representing the proportional ownership stake of the investors.
