Derivative

A financial contract (such as a future or option) whose value is derived from an underlying asset, group of assets, or benchmark.

The earliest derivative contracts were likely forward contracts used by farmers to lock in prices. Aristotle mentioned an early form of options in his Politics (4th century BCE) involving Thales and olive presses.
