Credit Default Swap (CDS)

A financial derivative contract that allows an investor to "swap" or offset their credit risk with that of another investor. It is essentially insurance against a bond default.

Developed by J.P. Morgan in 1994, it became a central and highly criticized instrument in the 2008 financial crisis due to its unregulated and highly leveraged use.
