Interest calculated on the initial principal, which also includes all of the accumulated interest from previous periods.

The concept was known to the Babylonians. Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci's 1202 book, Liber Abaci, was instrumental in mathematically analyzing and popularizing its powerful effect in Europe.
