Blue Chip Stock

Stock of a large, well-established, and financially sound company that has operated profitably for many years.

The term originated in the game of poker, where blue chips are traditionally the highest-valued chips. It was first used to describe stocks in the 1920s by Dow Jones employee Oliver Gingold.
