Bear Market

A condition in which security prices fall 20% or more from recent highs over a sustained period, accompanied by widespread pessimism.

The term possibly comes from the 18th-century "bearskin jobbers," who sold animal pelts they had not yet received, akin to selling stock short in expectation of a price drop.
