Asset Allocation

An investment strategy that aims to balance risk and reward by apportioning a portfolio's assets according to an individual's goals, risk tolerance, and investment horizon.

Derived from Harry Markowitz's 1952 work on modern portfolio theory, which proved that an investment's expected return is less important than how it contributes to the overall portfolio risk.
