Annual Percentage Rate (APR)

The annual rate charged for borrowing or earned by investing, expressed as a single percentage number that represents the actual yearly cost of funds over the term of a loan.

Legislation in the mid-20th century (like the U.S. Truth in Lending Act of 1968) mandated its use to standardize how lenders disclose the true cost of credit to consumers.
