Amortization

1. The gradual writing off of the initial cost of an intangible asset. 2. The process of paying off debt over time through regular payments.

The word comes from the Old French amortir, meaning "to kill or extinguish." It has been used in accounting since the early 20th century to track the diminishing value of intangible assets.
