401(k)

An employer-sponsored defined-contribution retirement plan, allowing employees to defer pre-tax income into investments, often with employer matching contributions.

Named after a section of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code (IRC) passed in 1978. It was initially created to cover executive compensation but was accidentally discovered as a broad employee benefit in the early 1980s.
