Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI)

An index of the prevailing direction of economic trends in the manufacturing and service sectors, based on monthly surveys of private sector companies.

Developed in the U.S. in 1931 by the Institute for Supply Management, it is highly valued as a leading indicator of economic health because it tracks new orders and production before official GDP data is released.
